A lightning delay is the suspension of outdoor play when a cloud-to-ground strike is detected within a defined radius of the venue, most commonly 8 miles. Play resumes only after 30 consecutive minutes with no strike inside that radius; every new strike resets the clock. There is no maximum delay.

The rules by sport

The physics is identical everywhere; the paperwork differs. This is what each code actually specifies.

The backdrop: U.S. lightning activity rose about 20% in 2025 to 251.8 million events, an eight-year high (Vaisala Annual Lightning Report 2025). Delays are not getting rarer.

Why the radius, not the rain

Cloud-to-ground lightning routinely strikes 6 to 10 miles from the parent storm, ahead of the rain and occasionally from sky that looks clear overhead. Waiting for overhead thunder means the venue is already inside strike range. Detection-based radii exist so the decision happens before the storm's reach arrives, and the 30-minute clock exists because trailing strikes kill: a large share of casualties happen after the rain has passed, when people return outside too early.

Who makes the call, and how the best venues make it

Every credible guidance document (NWS, CISA, NFHS, NATA) agrees on the same skeleton: a written policy, defined trigger distances, one named decision-maker, a reliable detection source, a way to notify everyone at once, and a record of what was done. The difference between venues is not the rule; it is whether the rule runs on someone glancing at a free app, or on professional detection that alerts the whole staff simultaneously and timestamps every decision. Industry guidance for events is blunt on this point: for higher-risk gatherings, relying on free consumer apps may not constitute reasonable precaution.

How long is a lightning delay?
At least 30 minutes from the most recent strike inside the suspension radius. Because every new strike resets the clock, typical real-world delays run 45 to 90 minutes, and multi-hour delays happen every season. There is no maximum.
What is the 30-minute lightning rule?
Play resumes only after 30 consecutive strike-free minutes inside the radius. It is the standard across NFHS and NCAA sport, golf, professional leagues and major events, and appears in NWS, CISA and NATA guidance.
Why 8 miles?
Because lightning routinely strikes 6 to 10 miles from the storm core. An 8-mile trigger stops play before the venue is inside strike range rather than after.
Who decides when play stops?
Whoever the venue's lightning policy names: match officials, a designated weather watcher, the golf committee, or event control. Good policies tie the decision to detection data so nobody has to guess.
Can play be abandoned entirely?
Yes, at the officials' discretion once delays become impractical. Nothing forces abandonment automatically.
Do roofed stadiums have lightning delays?
Play usually continues under a full roof, but operators still track nearby strikes for everything outside the bowl: queues, concourses, fan zones, car parks, staff.
